We've all seen a ghost or two at some point in our lives. Mostly during our childhoods. We'd see them in our classrooms, on the playground, in doctor's offices or churches. And then, without warning, they disappeared. Forced out by grown-up preoccupations like sorting the recycling and filing tax returns.
I thought I was done with ghosts - until one found his way into my imagination and wouldn't let me rest until I told his story.
When I was finishing school I told everyone that I planned to live on a beach and write bad poetry for the rest of my life. But I soon found how difficult it is to live on a beach and support yourself with only an english degree. I went back to school to become a lawyer (so I could afford to be a writer), only to find myself so buried in student debt that I could do nothing but work. I finally made the decision to join the Army (so I could afford to be a lawyer, and find the time to be a writer). And it was during my introduction to the United States Jag Corps - in Charlottesville, Virginia - that my ghost found me.
Over the next few years I recorded pieces of his story, always disconnected and surreal. I took down a page here, a paragraph there, until the edges started to take shape and I could hear his heartbeat in my sleep. But it wasn't until my first deployment, in the endless deserts of Kuwait, that I was finally able to painstakingly weave it all together. The result is my first novel, The Ghost of Fort Leavenworth, and perhaps my first real step towards a forgotten beach that is still waiting for me.
Part mystery and part legal thriller, the Ghost of Fort Leavenworth is a sometimes grim look at the toll war can take on soldiers, the confusing role that the legal system plays in sorting through the aftermath, and the redemptive power of compassion and love. The Ghost of Fort Leavenworth will be available for purchase through Amazon on October 23rd. If you're interested in meeting me in person, along with a wide array of talented women, please join me for the Women of Words Fall Forum and Book Fair on November 7th.
Thanks for the support and keep your eyes open for ghosts.
